CAMPER AND ARCHITECT SHIGERU BAN UNLACE THEIR HOUSE OF SHOES

BY Pete Davies
A mix of shoe-lovers and archi-freaks turned out for the grand opening of the Camper House of Shoes in Soho Tuesday night, celebrating under the newly raised roof of the Camper Together store. The man behind the plan, architect Shigeru Ban, was on hand to unwrap his roof-top art construction.
Asked why he created a peaked roof amidst the square blocks of Soho, Ban said when he saw the little one-story building he thought “it looked lonely.” So he decided to make it someplace homey, turning it from a box into a house using rafters made of beefy cardboard tubes.
The space, at 110 Prince Street, is Camper’s first owner-occupied building in New York City.
